Obituary for Mary J Granite (Murgas)

Mary J. Granite, 92, of Clarence, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 5, 2016 at Centre Crest in Bellefonte. Born on August 21, 1923, in Clarence, she was the daughter of the late Matthew J. and Anna M. Smolko Murgas. On February 2, 1941 at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Clarence, she married Andrew A. Granite. Andrew passed away on June 20, 1997.
Mary attended the Cherry Run School. She was a member of the Queen of Archangels Roman Catholic Parish Church in Clarence. She also attended the St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Clarence. She had a strong faith in God and said the rosary every day.
Mary was a member of the Rosary Society, Jednota Lodge, and Clarence American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing all kinds of card games, playing bingo, puzzles and baking. She loved growing flowers and working in her flower gardens. She looked forward to Sundays when her family would come for dinner and she would make all their favorite foods, especially homemade soup. She felt it was very important for a lady to dress like a lady, wearing dresses and jewelry, even to the grocery store.
Mary is survived by her son; John Granite and his wife, Poppy, of Ocean City, MD, her three daughters; Dorothy Onder and her husband, John, of Clarence, Judy Kuhani and her husband, Hiram, of Kewi, HA, and Patsy Guthrie of Bellefonte, two brothers; John Murgas of Kylertown and George Murgas of State College, and two sisters; Helen Chambers and Dorothy Koleno, both of Clarence.
Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Mary was very proud that she was able to see five generations in her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She will be truly missed by all that knew her.
Along with her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by three brothers; Andrew, Joseph, and Michael, four sisters; Anna Soltis, Agnes Solomon, Margaret Danko, and Pauline Murgas, and one grandson, Shane Granite.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 from 2-4pm with a Ladies Auxiliary service at 4pm at the Daughenbaugh Funeral Home, 106 W. Sycamore St., Snow Shoe. Funeral services will follow at the funeral home with Father Will Rupp officiating. Burial will be private at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Clarence.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Centre Crest Employee Fund, 502 E. Howard St. Bellefonte, PA 16823. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Centre Crest for their love and support while Mary was a resident.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Daughenbaugh Funeral Home, 106 W. Sycamore St. Snow Shoe. An online guest book can be signed or condolences to the family available at www.daughenbaughfuneralhome.com.
